THE ODD COUPLE by Neil Simon

Directed by Neil Knipe

The Odd Couple would have been the first production to start and finish under our new name, Bite My Thumb - but sadly it never made it to stage.

The show seemed to be cursed from the start. It was very tricky to cast and to find the right talented people for the supporting roles: rehearsals started with one supporting role still uncast.  Within a week into rehearsals our director had to withdraw due to some extremely undesirable workload in his day job.  I stepped up to direct which meant the audition process had to be  restarted to recast the role I was playing.

A few weeks later and the actor who successfully gained my supporting role had to drop out as a vital operation ended up clashing with the performance dates.  This now found me performing and directing which is always very impractical and virtually impossible ... for me anyway.

The final blow came just two weeks before the opening night when one of the leads had to very reluctantly leave the show due to some serious health reasons.  Various different options were looked into to save the production but it became clear that all roads led to an inferior rushed show that wasn't of sufficient quality to give to our paying audience.

It was a big shame for numerous reasons and for all involved but the most disappointing thing for me was that an audience didn't get to see the performances of our two leads, Rob and Mike Atkinson.  These two brothers were giving a master class on how to perform comedy and the energy and chemistry between them was electric.
